COLA & Artificial Go – (((folkYEAH!))) Presents HopMonk Sebastopol, the Abbey
C.O.L.A. is an acronym for Cost of Living Adjustment, a fitting conceptual framework for the band’s third record. Why? Because C.O.L.A. considers, among other things, socialism vs. hell. It considers: rolling the dice of life. The eerie and sweet pangs that nostalgia can provoke. This is not new territory for band members Tim Darcy, Evan Cartwright, and Ben Stidworthy. It is, in Cartwright’s words “a deepening of what we’ve been doing.” C.O.L.A. is an intricate, beautiful, and sometimes strange record. It is the band’s most refined offering. A perfection of carefully honed aesthetic impulses.
Colby Acuff: Handmade Horsepower Tour – Napa Music Hall: Ballroom
Colby Acuff plays outlaw-style country music that will take you back to the heydays of Willie and Waylon from the 1970's. A little more mainstream than I typically like, but there's something special in this that jumps out at me. For fans of Sturgill Simpson, Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile
Carsie Blanton + The Burning Hell – Mystic Theatre, Petaluma
Carsie Blanton has already sold out the Sweetwater Music hall for her 9/24 show, but I don't think this one is on many folks radar! Check out this new rising voice of Alt-Country/Americana in these small venues while you can now! She's on a rocketship the the next level! Jump on now. For fans of Dolly, Sierra Ferrell & Tammy Wynette meets THE MUPPETS! Seriously, a large amount of her videos on YouTube contains puppets! She's so much damned fun and highly political. I can't wait to see her live!
Stoneteenth & Lindsay Gang – Lost Church: Santa Rosa
Mike Clark from The Haunted Windchimes and Mike Clark & The Sugar Sounds has teamed up with audio engineer Cole Halvorsen for Stoneteeth! Stoneteeth is a voice from the bottom, the gutter, the last penny in your pocket, the drunk sleeping at the end of the bar full of wisdom and cheap whiskey that you write off until they wake up and piss on your party.
Chuck Prophet & His Cumbia Shoes – HopMonk Tavern Novato (Outdoor Venue)
California singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer Chuck Prophet’s new collaborative album with Cumbia group ¿Qiensave? – was released through Yep Roc Records. An extraordinary and unlikely pairing, Prophet and ¿Qiensave? blend seamlessly together as the collection dives headfirst into the world of Cumbia music, which consumed and comforted Prophet during a recent bout with stage four lymphoma and subsequent recovery. They also shared the album’s lead single and title track “Wake The Dead,” an anthem that reckons with forces beyond our control while learning to let go, a recurring theme at the core of the album.
The Nick Lawrence Transgender Experience (Matinée) – Lost Church: Santa Rosa
Join singer-songwriter and storyteller Nick Lawrence for a bold, funny, heartfelt, and unforgettable evening of music, comedy, and candid conversation.
Blending songs from his album I Am a Man with personal stories, childhood photos, and stand-up-style humor, Nick takes the audience on a journey through gender, identity, family, resilience, and self-discovery. With honesty and wit, he reflects on a lifetime of being “misgendered” — only to realize he was actually being seen for who he truly was all along.
J. Roddy Walston – Little Saint: Healdsburg
Live at Little Saint: J. Roddy Walston is a force of nature. If his hits like Heavy Bells are a war cry, then the deep cuts like Boys Can Never Tell are a tac cal cosmic retreat. For some, his music is a form of religion, psychedelic in its intensity, transforma ve in its grip on the body, shaking loose something primal that’s been buried too long. It’s not about thinking, It’s about moving, feeling, surrendering. His influences are a riot of contradic ons: Kurt Cobain’s fury, Nilsson’s fractured sweetness, Zeppelin’s power, and somewhere in there a perverted nod to William Onyeabor’s lonely calculator funk. Cri cs try to box him in, but Walston can’t be contained—he does chaos, and his live shows do damage, but fortunately his songs can pay the tab. Catch him and his band before he burns it all down again.
